Mathematics

The field of mathematics encompasses areas such as algebra, geometry, calculus, probability, statistics, vector analysis, logic, and trigonometry.  The following selected mathematics related resources can be found at the lower level of the Science Industry and Business Library (SIBL).

Dictionaries & Encyclopedias These sources provide explanations, definitions, descriptions, overviews, background information on a wide range of key terms and people involved with mathematics.

Handbooks Generally compendiums of in-depth essays written by various authors on specific topics in mathematics; formulas, tables, functions may be included.

Directories Sources for contact information for societies, associations, government agencies, academic institutions, and research centers.

Biographies Biographical works specific to mathematicians can be found in *R-QA28 section as well as in the general biographical works on scientists *R-Q130 and *R-Q141. Often these works include historical accounts and developments of mathematical discoveries.

Encyclopedic dictionary of mathematics / by the Mathematical Society of Japan; edited by Kiyosi Itô. Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, c1987. *R-Science QA5 .I8313 1987.  The English version of Iwanami s¯ugaku jiten (in Japanese) 3rd ed. 

Encyclopaedia of mathematics : an updated and annotated translation of the Soviet "Mathematical encyclopaedia". [managing editor, M. Hazewinkel]. Nine volume set plus index and supplements.  Entries are of three types: surveys dealing with main directions and current state of affairs of the field, detailed concrete descriptions of problems/results/techniques, and lastly, short reference definitions.  Editorial comments and references are included with entries.

McGraw-Hill dictionary of mathematics. Sybil P. Parker, editor in chief.  New York: McGraw-Hill, c1997. *R-SIBL QA5. M425. Covers all branches of mathematics from high school to university levels.  Terms are drawn from the McGraw Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms. Along with definitions and pronunciations, entries may also include synonyms, acronyms, and abbreviations.

World of mathematics.  Brigham Narins, editor. Detroit, Mich.: Gale Group, c2001. *R-SIBL QA5 .W67. Encyclopedic entries covering concepts, biographies, and how mathematics relates to art, culture, music and literature.

Handbooks

These sources are generally compendiums of in-depth essays written by various authors on specific topics in mathematics; formulas, tables, functions may be included.

Wiley, c1980-c1985. *R-Science QA36 .H36.  A series of core volumes on algebra, probability, numerical methods, analysis, geometry/combinatorics, and statistics, with a focus is on the practice of mathematics.

Handbook of mathematical, scientific, and engineering formulas, tables, functions, graphs, transforms. Staff of Research and Education Association; M. Fogiel, director. Piscataway, N.J.: Research and Education Association, c1997. *R-SIBL QA40 .H357.  Provides formulas, tables, functions, etc. with very little text explanations. The first part covers the various areas in math with a section on special functions (gamma, beta, Bessel, Z transform).  The second section is on science and engineering data in structural design, mechanical technology, biomedical technology, electrical and chemical technology, and tables of compound interest factors.

Mathematical handbook for scientists and engineers : definitions, theorems, and formulas for reference and review. Granino A. Korn and Theresa M. Korn. Mineola, N.Y.: Dover Publications, 2000. (originally pub. in 1968 by McGraw Hill. *R-SIBL QA40 .K598.  Each chapter has introductory text, definitions, formulas, review, with notes and references.  Detailed discussions are included also in smaller print, but with proofs omitted.

Upper Saddle River, N.J.: Prentice Hall, c2002. *R-SIBL QA21 .S975.  The origins and creative processes of elementary mathematics which includes numeration, arithmetic, geometry, algebra, calculus, real analysis, probability, statistics, number theory, differential equations, and more.

The rainbow of mathematics : a history of the mathematical sciences / Ivor Grattan-Guinness. New York: W.W. Norton, 2000. *R-SIBL QA21 .G695.  A history of mathematics from the “remote past” to the Great War of 1914-18.

A searchable, digitized archive -- from the first date of publication up to the last three to five years -- of major scholarly journals in many fields, including mathematics.

IMA journal of applied mathematics. London; New York: Academic Press. JSP 83-32. Articles provide analytical and numerical treatments of all areas of applied mathematical problems, including those arising from industry.

IMA journal of mathematical control and information. Oxford, England: Oxford University Press. JSP 91-288. Articles on mathematical control theory, system theory and applied information sciences.

IMA journal of numerical analysis. London; New York: Academic Press. JSP 83-33. Articles that treat the theory, development or use of practical algorithms and interactions between these aspects.

Mathematics magazine. Washington, Mathematical Association of America. JSM 94-464. Online via JSTOR , except last 5 years. Articles, mathematical problems, and book reviews focusing on history and contemporary applications.

The Quarterly journal of mechanics and applied mathematics. Oxford, Clarendon Press. JSL 03-12. Publishes original research articles in application of math to fluid and solid mechanics, classical electromagnetism, nonlinear dynamics and combined fields such as magnetohydro-numerical methods.
