Cassis
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's CD ROM database allows users to search
through all the currently registered and pending US trademarks. Users may
search by words in the trademark, design codes (for logos, drawings and graphics),
owner name, and international class of goods and services.
United States Patent and Trademark
Office (www.uspto.gov)
The USPTO's web page offers excellent information on all aspects of trademarks,
including trademark searching for full text and logos, fee schedules, online
versions of their most popular brochures, forms, and background information
on trademarks.
Directory of US Trademarks
This 11 volume set of books allows users to search through all US Trademarks
registered as of the data of publication. Users may search by words in the
trademark and by international class of goods and services.
Index of US Trademarks
This annual publication of the US Patent and Trademark Office lists all of
the registered trademarks current for the year of publication.
Design Search Code Manual
This manual allows users to translate a logo, drawing, or graphic into design
codes that can then be used in Cassis to search for other trademarks with
similar or identical designs in them.

The international volumes are an excellent source of foreign trademarks.

Standard Directory of Advertisers
This set of books lists advertisers (i.e. companies who advertise) and their
advertising agencies. The index volume includes a Tradename Index and is
an excellent source of trademarks that lists both the owner of the trademark
and the advertising agency that handles the account. This sources is good
for both US and foreign trademarks.
Advertising Red Books Online (EIC)
This CD ROM version of the Standard Directory of Advertisers allows you to
search by product name. It retrieves both the owner of the trademark and the
advertising agency that handles the account. This sources is good for both
US and foreign trademarks.
Thomas Register of American Manufacturers (print
and CD)
Thomas Food Industry Register
These sources, available in both print and electronic format, lists products
and their manufacturers and includes a product name index.
Other resources for searching for trademarks: Use catalogs and directories
specific to the industry or product line you are interested in. These
types of sources will often include products whose trademarks are not
registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office, but rather with
a state trademark office or a foreign government.

This guide gives step by step instructions on how to use the US Patent and
Trademark Office's CD ROM product to search all the registered and pending
federal trademarks. Copies are available at the EIC Desk and in electronic
format and in a version with fewer graphics.

This class gives a general introduction to US trademarks and SIBL's trademark
resources, and it gives step-by-step instructions on how to conduct a trademark
search. It is taught by a SIBL librarian and is offered free of charge,
