Unless otherwise specified, all of the call numbers refer to items which can be retrieved on the Lower Level of the Science, Industry and Business Library. (*R precedes Library of Congress call numbers, which are on items on the Open Reference Shelves of the Lower Level or at the McGraw Desk).

The New York Public Library, as a federal depository library, receives treaties in a variety of formats. Please consult the indexes before trying to locate the text.

Treaties are negotiated and signed by the President, but need the consent of the Senate in order to be ratified.

The President sends a treaty he has negotiated to the Senate as a "Senate Treaty Document." The Senate, most of the time, marks up and approves the "Senate Treaty Document"; then it issues a "Senate Executive Report" which will also include the final text of the treaty and sends it back to the President who usually ratifies it.

About six months after its effective date the treaty is issued in slip (pamphlet) form and is assigned a sequential number (TIAS #). Eventually, treaties are collected and published in bound vols. (UST)
