A Guide to the Collections
of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library

The General Research Division of The New York Public Library collects extensively in specific areas of psychology, with the general emphasis of the collection being in theory and research rather than applied, practical or medical aspects of psychology. Major collection strengths include all bibliographies, histories and biographies relevant to major theorists in the field (i.e., Freud, Jung, Adler, Piaget). Other areas of collecting emphasis include:

  • Cognition, consciousness, reasoning and intelligence
  • Perception and sensation
  • Learning and memory
  • Creativity
  • Developmental psychology
  • Emotions
  • Personality
  • Pathology of sex roles and sex differences
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Psychopathology (i.e., histories of treatments as well as current research in the field)

The Division also collects in other areas closely linked with the study of psychology, such as philosophy, folklore and mythology, religion, anthropology and parapsychology.
